What is the basic charge?
Each account is charged a basic charge to cover ongoing operations and maintenance expenses. All accounts are billed a basic charge even if no energy is used during the month.
What is the energy charge on my bill?
Each account is charged for the amount of energy used during the billing period. The rate schedule includes a tiered rate that increases with the amount of energy used. View the current rate schedules to learn more.
Can I pay my bill automatically?
Yes, you can pay with a credit card or from your checking account. The payments are debited from your account on the 15th of each month. Call our office to sign up or log onto your account for more information. Please do not send your credit card number or checking account number by email.
Do you charge a fee if my bill is paid late?
Bills are due on the 23rd of each month. In order to defray the cost of collection a late fee of $5.00 or one percent, whichever is greater, is charged on the past due amount. A fee is also charged for trips by Northern Lights servicemen for collection, connection, or disconnection.
What is Operation Roundup?
Operation Roundup is a program developed by electric cooperatives around the country. By registering for the program members agree to have their bill rounded up to the next dollar. The amounts collected are distributed by a board composed of members from each district. Sign up and learn more on our Operation Roundup page.
What is the Helping Hand program?
Northern Lights administers a program to help your fellow members in need with their power bill. To contribute just add your donation to the front of the bill or call the office if you would like a donation to be automatically added to your bill each month.
Why is my bill so high?
Energy bills are based on the amount of power that flows through the meter. Cold weather or an appliance that has malfunctioned can cause your bill to be abnormally high.
Why does it cost so much for a new service?
The Northern Lights Board policy states that the cost of a new service will be covered by the member so that existing members do not have to subsidize the cost of construction.The costs include labor performed by office personnel, staking engineers, lineman, and managers. It also includes materials, vehicles, fuel, insurance, and overhead items such as employee benefits and insurance.
The cost of each job is estimated by the staking engineer. After the job is complete, the costs are calculated and compared to the estimate. If the job costs less than the estimate, the balance is returned to the member. If the cost is more than the estimate the member is not billed.
