Stay Safe Around Dams

Northern Lights owns and operates the Lake Creek hydroelectric project near Troy, Montana. Although this is a relatively small dam compared to others in our region, it still poses a safety hazard for those recreating around Lake Creek.
While summer recreation around waterways is winding down, fall fishing is still a draw. NLI encourages everyone to follow some simple safety guidelines while near any dam.
People are often unaware of the dangers, or they underestimate their risk of falling victim to them. It may be a case of a simple lack of knowledge, reckless behavior, lack of warning, or being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Stay clear of the dam. Keep a safe distance from the dam structure both upstream and downstream. Obey warning signs and signals around dams. Do not cross safety buoys and booms. Fenced-off areas should not be entered.
Dams often create swift and turbulent currents near intakes, spillways, outlets, and tailraces. Swimmers and boaters can be caught in these unsafe conditions.
Some dams have gates or control outlets that may operate at any time and create sudden changes in flow and water levels as they open and close.
As you enjoy the beautiful waterways of our region this fall, remember that safety should always be your top priority. By being aware of the potential hazards and exercising caution around dams, we can ensure our time spent outdoors remains fun and safe. Stay alert and happy recreating.
