Water heating is one of the biggest energy expenses in many homes. A heat pump water heater can help you use less electricity—and Northern Lights offers rebates of up to $1,800 for qualifying models.
How Does It Work?
A heat pump water heater, also called a hybrid water heater, moves heat from the surrounding air into the water tank. Instead of creating all its heat with electricity, it uses heat that’s already available.
These units can use as little as one-third of the electricity used by a standard electric water heater.
Find the Right Fit for Your Home
There are two main types:
- All-in-one units: The heat pump and water tank are together in one unit. These work well in spaces without heating or cooling. Some can use ducts to bring air in or send air outside when installed in living spaces.
- Split systems: The heat pump is outdoors, separate from the water tank. This can offer more installation options when indoor space or airflow is limited, such as in a closet.
Do You Qualify?
You may qualify for a rebate of up to $1,800* if:
- You are a current Northern Lights member.
- Your home is an existing single-family or manufactured home with electric heat.
- Your new heat pump water heater is on the Bonneville Power Administration’s qualified products list.
Before you buy, check that your model qualifies.

What You’ll Need to Apply
Submit:
- A completed rebate/project information form.
- A purchase receipt or invoice showing the water heater’s make and model number.
*Limit one per household. The rebate amounts vary depending on tank size and rated efficiency. The rebate amount cannot to exceed the cost shown on your invoice.
