Northern Lights, Inc. (NLI) is offering home energy audits to members with stick built homes (not new) with electric heat. Jim Dustman, a Certified Residential Energy Auditor and Inspector, conducts the audits. Jim’s inspection will help determine if the home will benefit from new windows, insulation, or weather stripping. After his inspection, he will discuss potential energy rebates with the homeowner. During the inspection, Jim will install compact fluorescent bulbs and energy saving shower heads (limit 2) for customers whose water is heated by electricity.
Call 208-255-7187 or email elissa.glassman@nli.coop to schedule an appointment. A $50 refundable audit fee is charged before the audit begins. If the homeowner completes work suggested during the audit, the audit fee will be refunded. Click here for a brochure describing the program.
In both stick-built and manufactured homes with forced-air heating and cooling systems, ducts are used to distribute conditioned air throughout the house. In a typical home, however, 20 percent to 50 percent of the air that moves through the duct system is lost due to leaks, holes and poorly connected ducts. The result is higher utility bills. You could be losing as much as 35 percent of your heat in your crawlspace.
If you qualify, Northern Lights may pay to have your ducts sealed. Elgible homes must have electric heat and the ducts must be located in an unconditioned space such as a crawl space or attic. A pre-test is performed to determine the duct leakage and if necessary, duct sealing measures will be performed. The ducts are then again re-tested to determine if the the contractor has met specifications. Northern Lights is working with three certified contractors to complete duct sealing for our members. If you qualify Northern Lights pays the contractor directly-you will have no cost.
